2010: Rush Hour

2010 Day 5

My mother spent Christmas with my family, and Day 5 was the day she went home. On our way to the airport, we hit rush hour traffic. As it is in many metropolitan areas, in Atlanta that means you come to a full and complete stop (keep your seat belt fastened and your arms inside the car). So while we were sitting in stopped traffic, I quick-like grabbed this photo of the sun setting behind the information sign telling me how long it would take me to get to a place I didn't want to go.

I'm happy to add we got to the airport on time.

I finished up a shopping trip just as the sun was going down. When these sky colors greeted me in the parking lot, I knew I had to get a shot. The foreground's not very pretty. The background's not very pretty. But I still think the sky is stunning.

Post-processing: noise reduction, sharpening, border addition.

I was sitting in my truck, waiting for my daughter's soccer practice to end, and taking pictures of random things within sight of my camera. My daughter only practices in two different places, at two different schools. And I think I've shot everything within reach of the parking lot at both. So it comes as no surprise that I was quite uninspired as I sat there, almost taking pictures as an afterthought.

I do have some interesting photos of my foot, if that tells you anything.

When the sun started setting, inspiration finally hit. But this time it wasn't the colors in the sky that had me grabbing for my camera and praying the picture would capture it. It was the rays.

Maybe I'm sheltered. Maybe I'm horribly deprived. I've got scads of pictures where the sun's rays are busting through the clouds and shining down onto the earth, but I can't recall ever seeing the rays going up. So, yeah, this picture choice was a no-brainer.

This Way and That

It's an evening shot. Sunset. Yes, it's kind of a cop out. Almost a cliche. But we need a good cliche every once in a while. And it's here for the simple reason that on Day 23 of Project 365, the scene struck me.

I was waiting for my daughter to finish her soccer tryouts for the day (she just got word today, BTW, she made the team!) and the sky over the soccer field caught my attention. More precisely, the clouds did. They seemed to be in motion though they didn't appear to be moving. It almost looked they they were starting to go one way, changed their mind, then went the other way. And the result was a cool scene to my eyes.

A little bit heavier post-processing on this one: the usual sharpening and noise reduction, plus a boost in blues and the addition of a polarizing effect.
