Light Up the Sky

DAY 100

10 APR 09

Major storms rolled through North Georgia, some were pretty destructive. Luckily, the worst of it missed us, but we did manage to see thunderstorms with heavy rain. I thought it'd be fun to try and get a shot of the rain on my patio lit just by the patio lights, and I ended up with a purely-by-chance shot.

Just as I hit the shutter, lightning lit up the sky. I had a handful of very dark pictures before this one and a handful of very dark pictures after this one. This one was my favorite.

Post-production: noise reduction, sharpening, border addition.

  1. Wow that is COOL! And I can see how hard it's raining by the splashes on the patio. Are you able to set your shutter speed on your camera to really long exposures like 20 or 30 seconds? If so, try it sometime, put your f-stop around f/8 or so, put the camera on a tripod, and point it toward the horizon in the direction of most of the lightning and you might get some cool shots of the lightning itself. Just gotta hope the lightning flashes while your shutter is open.We rarely get lightning here, but I got a few shots last summer. Here's the best one.

  2. Whoa. That is one awesome shot!

Yeah, I can control shutter speed with the little camera (not sure offhand of the longest setting), but if I'm gonna go for lightning shots, I'll pull out the 40D. :)

Unfortunately, my house is surrounded by trees, so that kind of lightning shot is tough. One of these days, though...
