2010: Red Light

2010 Day 27

27 JAN 2010

Nothing much interesting to say about this photo -- it's one of the taillights on my truck. There are some pretty nice reflections in the lens, though.

Leaving the Light On

Day 159

08 JUNE 09

This is me once again playing with available light. Anybody else seeing a pattern here? It's one of my living room lamps, shot at a mildly jaunty angle in an effort to add interest. Did it work?

Post-processing: noise reduction, sharpening, border addition. I kept it simple on this one.

Blinding Light

DAY 114

24 APR 09

This is a cabbage plant my son brought home from school. My husband repotted it for him, and it's now sitting on the end table next to the window. On Day 114, the sunlight was coming in through the blinds and doing a cool stripey backlighting thing on the cabbage leaf.

The photo title? I know the light isn't blinding. Blinds Light would have been more accurate, but it just plain sounds stupid. Blind Light sounds completely wrong. Therefore, Blinding Light it is.

Post-processing: noise reduction, sharpening, curves adjustment, border addition, and I added a lens flare just for fun.

Writing Exercise

DAY 54

23 FEB 09

My son is learning to write in school. Not penmanship, but writing stories. Structure. And my son, he ain't getting it.

He came home from school with a page filled with sentences. On that page was a sticky note saying he needed to rewrite the paper. In paragraphs. So my son dutifully sat down and did the work. And came back with a page filled with nothing but paragraphs. Each sentence was its own paragraph.

Now, I'm all for frequent paragraphing; it can have quite an impact. But that was overdone, even for me. It quickly became clear to me that the poor little guy had no idea of the purpose for paragraphs. I came up with a way to help him understand.

We scribbled each sentence onto a piece of paper, then cut them apart so that each sentence was its own slip of paper. Then I had him separate the slips of paper into groups. Why dogs are good to have around was one group. How to care for a dog was another. From those piles, he was able to write his paper. With paragraphs. And I was able to comfortably say he did all the work.

This photo is some of those slips of paper lined up on my dining room table, waiting to be written into paragraphs. The sunlight was coming in through the blinds, and I thought it made an interesting scene.

Post processing was simple: noise reduction, sharpening, curves adjustment, black and white conversion using Photoshop's black and white adjustment with the maximum black setting, and a border addition.

Deep Blue Night

DAY 17

17 JAN 09

Today was a lazy day. I didn't go anywhere, didn't do anything. I sat on the couch and watched movies. So when my husband suggested a quick trip to Wal-Mart, I knew it would be my only chance to get a shot for today's Project 365.

Some days (like yesterday) I take hundreds of shots. Other days, I know the moment I get THE shot and only take one or two. Today, it was a small handful. Not because I knew I got the shot, but because it's all I had time for. Today involved a lot of praying.

This is my local Wal-Mart parking lot. The lights caught my attention, so I thought I'd give a photograph a try. My husband laughed at me. My son asked if I was shooting UFOs. My daughter looked into the LCD on the camera and said, "Huh. Cool shot."

Me? I said I sure hope this means my Project 365 shot is done.

Post-processing included noise reduction, straightening and sharpening, a little bit of color boost (it really didn't need much -- it was the deep sky color that make it such a cool shot for me), and the addition of the border.

Rainy Night in Georgia

DAY 4

04 JAN 09

Much-needed rain falling on my back patio. Looks like this photo serves two purposes; it's also a much-needed reminder to clean my windows. *sigh*
